Me and my Truck

"Every day is a new adventure"

Every day, many drivers are on the road for Bulkio throughout Europe. They are responsible for the safe transport, loading and unloading of bulk goods. The entire logistics operation revolves around them. They are also the faces of our company. Óscar Riaño Martínez, working for Transportes Agustin Riaño S.A., is one of these faces. In his MAN TGX, he drives from northern Spain right across Europe.

Do you always drive the same routes?
“Not usually, which makes my job even more enjoyable: I love variety. I mainly transport grains, minerals and plastics in bulk to Western European customers in the chemical and petrochemical industries, and the agri-food sector. I often visit the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy and, of course, our next door neighbours, France.”

For you, what’s so special about your profession?
“Working as a truck driver feels like freedom to me. During my travels, I see beautiful landscapes, visit stunning places and meet new people. Every day in the truck is a new adventure. My most memorable trip was the first long route I took with my father to Strasbourg. What struck me was the camaraderie among the drivers. That was the moment I knew I wanted to work in this industry too.”

What makes a truck comfortable?
“First and foremost, a comfortable bed, because rest is a crucial part of my rhythm. Powerful air conditioning is essential to be prepared for heat and cold. I also appreciate plenty of storage space – for my clothes, for example. And finally, a good refrigerator and cooking equipment. I often prepare my own meals on the road. I even take a few cookbooks with me wherever I go.”

Do you also take personal items with you?
“Absolutely. I’m often away from home for long periods of time and spend many hours in my cabin. Thanks to photos of my family, souvenirs and other personal items, my cabin feels like a second home. Think of a drawing from my nephew, a bracelet I received from a relative or a coffee mug I once bought with my partner. Even though I’m far away, my loved ones are always close by.”

Can you enjoy what you encounter along the way?
“Totally. For me, driving a truck is more than just transporting goods. I see it as a wonderful opportunity to discover special places. I’ve enjoyed sightseeing trips to cities like Bordeaux and Strasbourg, for example. Even small villages that don’t make it into guidebooks can be wonderful surprises.”

What does it mean to be a transporter for Bulkio?
“For me, it’s primarily peace and security. We’re part of a family business that takes good care of its employees. I feel valued in material ways – like having a well-equipped truck – but also in our interactions with each other. I’m proud to be part of the Van den Bosch family and hope to remain so for a long time to come.”
